Episode 121 – EAE Bite #20 – Make Yourself Accountable

Being successful as a writer takes more than just having a story to tell. You also need the desire, some knowledge of grammar and punctuation, and tools like pens and paper or laptop.

But for many, there’s one more essential ingredient: accountability.

In episode 121 of the Life Writers Vlog, we dig into Bite #20 from Eating an Elephant: Write Your Life One Bite at a Time, “Make Yourself Accountable.”

Many writers, even those deeply passionate about storytelling, struggle to prioritize writing. Something that feels more urgent or interesting tends to commandeer our best intentions. To combat this, accountability can be the key to actually getting words on the page.

Joining a writing group, taking a class, or participating in cowriting sessions can provide this necessary structure.

Even informal check-ins with a friend—telling them when you’re writing and following up afterward—can be surprisingly effective.

If you naturally write without a push, that’s amazing! But if not, a good dose of accountability might finally get your life stories written.

Tell us, how do you keep yourself accountable for writing the stories you want to tell?

I usually have no problem with accountability because I am in front of my computer every morning. Writing is my passion and I cannot wait to step into my room as soon as I wake-up. I also write in a group. Last Sunday, I participated in a South African writing group. We wrote for an hour, then had a lesson, and, at the end of two hours, each participant talked about what they accomplished or needed help with. It was great!

On my computer, I have printed the words “I am the one who creates my own calendar.” Those words assist me very much in scheduling appointments. Now, I will adjust that saying and add “accountable.”  Thank you for acknowledging, in a way, that there is an elephant in the room and for raising this vital awareness to help hold me/us accountable.

My membership to Procrastinators Anonymous is still pending. But pending may be too strong a word because I haven’t sent the application in yet. I’m sure I’ll get to it this week or next week at the latest.
The prewriting takes the time for me. Once I get started in front of the computer it seems to flow, most of the time.
But I need the accountability or I’d never get to the sitting in front of the computer part.
