On the fourth Thursday of each month, we explore a memoir or writing craft book.
This time. we look at After the Eclipse by Sarah Perry, the story of a twelve-year-old girl whose mother is murdered while the child sleeps in the bedroom.
This book is many things. It’s a coming-of-age memoir, true crime story, family history, and more wrapped into one.
We also see how Perry’s structure, characterization, setting, vivid scenes, and thoughtful approach to memory make this a powerful memoir.
Is this a book you might like to read? Why or why not?

I’m not sure I could handle the account of her mother’s murder, though the rest of the book sounds intriguing. It might be a little too much real life! I’m still looking for those “happy” memoirs…
Sounds like a great read to me. Lots of writing exposure to experience.
I look for flowing sentences and colorful descriptions. Also, a good story, especially of a person overcoming an obstacle or on a path. This sounds like an interesting story, although I hate that her mother was murdered.
I look for a good story, like After the Eclipse has a mystery, which appeals to me. However, I don’t want one that’s too sad or dark.
