
Anything, and I mean anything, can serve as inspiration and fodder for our stories, but we have to remain open to receiving it. Even television commercials can transport us to places of our past.
Recently, I saw a John Deere commercial that said, “Every piece of land has a story.” That one line started me thinking.
Today’s video and prompt encourage you to explore the lands of your past.
But first, let’s do a bit of brainstorming, and then, we’ll write.
But remember, the only way to do this wrong is to not do it at all!

My friend Lois and I walked to our elementary school almost every day through a large section of woods. It was magical. The silence along the worn path we walked was broken only by singing birds or squirrels chasing each other up and down the expansive tree trunks. The old growth trees almost completely blocked sunlight. Many Saturdays we’d make a lunch, meet some friends and enjoy picnics of sandwiches, potatoe chips and a bottle of Coke. The reference to John Deere commercial reminded me of this image clipped from a magazine because it depicts the transition from horse-drawn plow to motorized tractor. The use a tractor allowed farmers to quickly advance from sustaining food for their families and communities to providing for whole regions and countries of hungry people and animals. The picture reminds me of that slower time, when horses did most of the work for humans, the weather imposed greater restrictions on what we could do each day, and how our dependency on the horse has changed.
