In my writing, it depends on whether I am writing to a prompt or writing a part of my life that requires research into my family history and/or history of the time period or place I am writing about. I can do a deep dive into research and be swallowed up for a few weeks on one story. If I am recalling memories, I go back after my first draft and add other memories that have surfaced. I think, and overthink, a subject until I hit “critical mass”, and then I write fast. Critical mass is where I just can’t stand it anymore, like an aerosol can dropped into a hot fire, and I just have to get it out or it’ll explode.
