If You Like Monkeys…
If you like monkeys, Costa Rica is the place to go!
I visited Parador Nature Resort and Spa in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, in June to finalize the Writing in the Rainforest retreat details. There, I encountered so many monkeys. The hotel grounds are a release site for many rehabilitated monkeys, so I didn’t have to go far to see and hear them.

I heard the howler monkeys long before I ever saw them. Their deep-throated calls combine a roar and grunt and can be heard for up to three miles. One person said they sounded like a garbage disposal, and he wasn’t too far off. They make great wake-up calls as long as you are on their schedule. Hear a howler’s call.
Many white-faced capuchin monkeys also roam the trees of the Parador. I saw lots of babies with their moms and juveniles playing tag and pull-your-tail with their playmates. Spider and squirrel monkeys were a bit more shy, so I didn’t see as many of those.

In the areas where the jump from one tree to the next is a bit far, the hotel strings ropes for the monkeys to get where they want to go. No one feeds them, so they aren’t a nuisance to guests at the hotel. Plus, they have lots to eat with all the mango, manga, and other fruit trees that form a canopy across the property.
