Sounds of the Night

In episode three of the Life Writers vlog, we are going to dip into a little book of writing prompts I wrote called I Remember: Fifty Prompts to Write Your Life Story and take a trip back to childhood.

Sounds of the night when I was a child were not unlike some of the sounds of the day: trains always going past our house. The lumbering
freight trains with their long loud whistle as they prepared to enter the crossing contrasted with the scream of the Rock Island Rocket as it
whizzed past our house. Then there was the purr of the Tom cat as he stretched out next to the warmth of the stove.
Sounds of the night, as a child, devastated me. Being kept in hiding… while hidden in the church basement backroom, the booming and banging as the boilers started up, with loud explosions to heat the church, made me jump. Some I’m still recovering from, and several I learned to block out. As many of you have witnessed, any surprising noise still makes me overreact and shudder. I plan to revisit several chapters in my life story to add sounds of the night. It is more engaging to include auditory descriptors—great prompt.
Yes, we often overlook sound even though we live surrounded by it. I think adding sound will add to your stories.
I will brainstorm this one. The prompt triggered a memory.
