Episode 108 – Praise, Prizes, and Prompting Memories

In today’s Life Writers Vlog episode, we dip into highlights from our one-hundredth vlog, award prizes to five lucky winners, and share a quick way to trigger childhood memories.

Thank you to everyone who commented on our one-hundredth episode about what you gain from these little videos. Your comments were so thoughtful and heartfelt. You all made me cry in the best possible way.

Thanks to Dave Godin, we now have a categorized index on the main page to help you easily find any vlog you want to watch. I will recommend that my favorite podcast host, Ronit Plank of Let’s Talk Memoir, do the same. I listen to her vlogs all the time, and I often can’t find an episode I want to revisit.

In this episode, you’ll also hear some wonderful viewer comments as they share how the vlog has influenced their writing journeys. Then, I’ll announce the five winners who’ll receive their choice of a signed copy of Eating an Elephant: Write Your Life One Bite at a Time or I Remember: Fifty Prompts to Write Your Life Story.

Congratulations to all the winners. I’ll be in touch soon. And thank you all so, so much for watching the vlogs and sharing your thoughts and memories.

Lastly, I’ll introduce a fun way to unlock childhood memories as we look at Bite #24 “That’s Good” from Eating an Elephant.

But always remember, The only way to do this wrong is to not do it at all!

Happy writing, everyone!

My favorite food is: Food. Mom was such a wonderful cook, there was nothing she prepared that was objectionable in any way; with three exceptions that had nothing to do with her preparation: I didn’t like cocktail shrimp, raw peppers and horseradish; and I was allowed to say “no” to those. As for the rest of Mom’s magic, each meal was an heavenly adventure; so much so, I couldn’t pick one thing out… well, maybe it was vegetables; I loved them and asked for them; any of them; in any form; buttered, plain or au gratin, with sauces… my hips… Read more »

One evening my husband and I were having vanilla ice cream for dessert. I poured Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup over top, and I was instantly transported to my childhood. There were five in the family and Mother would buy one pint of vanilla ice cream and cut it into five thin slices. We’d pass around the Hershey’s syrup to pour on top. It was delicious. Such a treat. I did write a short poem about it called “I Remember”. Anytime I squeeze that yummy syrup on ice cream, it still brings a warm smile even seventy plus years later.

Great index Patricia. Thanks a bunch.
I downloaded it just to have it on my computer even though I know it won’t update there.
BTW, the links work on the downloaded version.

The strongest memory I have of food is Mrs. Graff’s Pizza Burgers in my elementary school lunchroom. Her recipes were so popular she wrote a cookbook as a school fundraiser. The pizza burgers were a half hamburger bun, buttered and toasted, with a sloppy joe-like topping. The concoction was then tossed in the oven for a bit. I always got seconds. It was greasy and messy and probably wouldn’t be allowed within five hundred yards of a school today.

I’m sorry to say my fav food growing up was potato chips. We were not poor but not rich by a long shot and I coveted those chips. I can see myself now sitting in my swivel chair in front of the tv, feet propped on the wall, watching Bandstand and scarfing down a huge bag of Lays. I have a big smile on my face just thinking about it. Thanks for the memory. And thanks for choosing me to receive a prize!!! You’re the best!!!

When I moved to Pennsylvania, I developed a new appreciation for potato chips. There are so many small potato chip makers there. Middlesworth, Gibbles, Utz, Martins. All were great. I remember during a deployment, my brother-in-law sent me a whole box of chips. Now in Florida we chow down on Cape Cod Kettle Cooked (40% less fat). Its a daily habit.
