One of the best ways to characterize people, give the reader important information, make the situation more believable, and pick up the pace of your stories is to use dialogue. Dialogue isn’t scary; it can be a lot of fun to write if you realize it’s not actual but reconstructed speech. You don’t have to remember that conversation from forty years ago verbatim.
