Tonight’s book discussion of The Art of Memoir by Mary Karr centered on chapters fifteen through seventeen, pages 147-161.
Specifically, we looked at Karr’s comment on page 151, “False choices based on who you wish you were will result in places where the voice goes awry or the details chosen ring false.” Do you have trouble writing the truth when it makes you look bad? How do you confront that resistance?
Watch the video, and then, let us know if you have difficulties writing unattractive truths about yourself and what you do to push pass the avoidance in the comments section below.
Also, I mentioned the funny opening of a commencement address Karr gave at Syracuse University in May 2015, and Kit Dwyer found the recording for us: https://vimeo.com/127421353. Thanks, Kit. Karr makes a lot of great points. It’s certainly worth a listen.
