Rule #6 – Indirect Quotes

0%

Let’s breeze through number six. It’s no quotation marks for indirect quotes.

When you’re paraphrasing, not quoting word-for-word, throw in a that and forget the quotation marks.

If you wrote, I told Susan that I like the meatloaf best. No need for any quotation marks here.

Easy peasy, right?

Note: Many indirect quotations do not require that. Read your sentence without the that and hear how it sounds. If it’s understandable without that, cut it.
