Let’s breeze through number six. It’s no quotation marks for indirect quotes.
When you’re paraphrasing, not quoting word-for-word, throw in a that and forget the quotation marks.
If you wrote, I told Susan that I like the meatloaf best. No need for any quotation marks here.
Easy peasy, right?
Note: Many indirect quotations do not require that. Read your sentence without the that and hear how it sounds. If it’s understandable without that, cut it.
