Master Class – Moving In/Moving Out with Your Characters with Dr. Lezlie Laws

0%

We are so fortunate to have Dr. Lezlie Laws back with us for another master class.

Tonight, her topic is “Moving In and Moving Out with Your Characters,” and she’ll use an essay from her recent book of poetry and prose, Perfectly Still.

Please read “Seven Minutes”  prior to our session and consider the following questions as you work your way through the text:

1. Who is the main character?
2. Where does the story start? (Think timeline of the story.)
3. Where is the narrative, and where is the exposition in the piece?
4. What does the writer tell you about Anthony, and what does she show you about Anthony?
5. What does the writer tell you about Daniel, and what does she show you about Daniel?

Lezlie mentioned exposition several times in her talk, and I wanted to make sure you understood exactly what that meant. Exposition is background or explanatory information, which can be about your characters, setting, actions, or historical details significant to your story.

If you missed our April 2024 master class with Lezlie, here’s the replay of “Revisit, Review, Remix, Revise.”

She has also taught two previous master classes for Life Writers.

You can watch the replays of Focus and Creativity Meditation and Creativity, Mindfulness, and Meditation.

I also excerpted the ten-minute Meditation to Enhance Creativity to use whenever you feel the need.

I’ve had the pleasure of publishing a couple of other books besides Perfectly Still for Lezlie–Twelve Doors: Writing for Pleasure, Self-Expression, and Insight and the TIA Journal (Thank-Intend-Ask) that are definitely worth a look.
