In this session, we focused on pages 142-163, “Writing Groups” through “Letters” of Anne Lamott’s, Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life, and used this question to guide our discussion:
Discussion question: In Anne Lamott’s chapter, “Letters,” she submits a possible solution to writing anxiety that causes the mind to go blank—telling the story to someone you care about in a letter. Is this something you’ve tried? If so, how did it work for you? Why do you think it did or did not produce the desired result? Is this letter-writing technique something you might try when you’re stuck?
We also talked about how members use letters–ways to get past writers block, ease into stories, draft consolation letters, share moments with grandchildren, and more.
