Tonight, we learned about the upcoming micro-memoir session of Life Writers.
We’ll spend several months writing and reading micro-memoirs, and I created a special challenge that’s going to give you a lot of practice writing in this genre.
Every week, you’ll be given a topic and a word-count limit for your micro-memoir. Some weeks, you’ll be instructed to write your micro-memoir in a specific format, i.e., all dialogue, lists, and such.
I’ll have a course page set up for each of the sixteen weeks, where I’ll ask you to post your assignments. I will be doing this challenge–writing and posting–right alongside you. It’s going to be fun, and a bit intimidating for me. You guys are good!
We’re going to use Beth Ann Fennelly’s awesome book, Heating & Cooling: 52 Micro-Memoirs, as well as published pieces from Brevity, River Teeth’s Beautiful Things, Five Minutes, and possibly a few others. I suggest you obtain a copy of Heating & Cooling, but I will provide links to the various online essays.
After all the writing work is done, we’ll celebrate by creating a micro-memoir anthology and having an in-person reading. Woohoo!
It’s going to be a great session, and I can’t wait to kick off this adventure at the beginning of July. Stay tuned for more details.
