Book Craft Class – Pacing

0%

Pacing is how fast or slow a story moves. It can pump up excitement or allow readers to relax and take a breath. Readers are left gasping for air if the pacing is too fast for an extended time. Too slow, and they’re snoring.

Generally, action picks up the pace, and information slows it down.

Zamora’s got pacing down pat. In one scene on page eighty-seven, you’re gripping the edge of your seat as the boat flies over the break. Short sentences, quick dialogue, and high stakes amp up the adrenaline.

But then on page eighty-eight, Zamora slows it down with reflective moments, flashbacks, and detailed observations. It’s like a rollercoaster ride followed by a leisurely stroll on the beach.

So, pacing is the secret sauce in storytelling. Get it right, and readers will be begging for more.

Now, it’s your turn. Think of a memory that occurred within a few minutes, something that happened quickly with energy and movement. Once you’ve finished your pacing exercise, post it in the comments section below.

Harrowing tale, Nancy. Those VW Bugs were tough little cars, it held onto the road just enough.

Now that was an exciting story! Bet your mom didn’t find out about that until you were 40.
