Tonight, we discussed pages 280-300 of Solito by Javier Zamora.
Our conversation centered on the following:
On pages 297-300, Zamora uses imagery of the ocean to describe the Sonoran Desert they are currently crossing. What elements of the desert does he liken to the ocean? Why do you think he chose an underwater landscape to paint a picture of a desert?
We saw grass as seaweed, cactuses as coral, clouds as sea foam, Chino as a giant swimming fish, the four as coral and rocks, and seashells and pearls covering the ground.
The chances of having Javier Zamora come and speak to us are pretty slim, but the California Book Club has a free session where he will talk, read, and answer questions. The club meets on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 8:00 ET. You have to register to attend, but there is no fee. Use this link to register: California Book Club: Javier Zamora.
