Wild – Pages 117-174

In our book study of Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed, we discussed chapters 8-10, pages 117-174.

For our discussion, we focused on this topic:

Reflection is a tool used by writers and occurs when the author pauses the main story to make sense of past experiences. Reflection can include the author’s insights, interpretations, or emotional understanding. It’s where memories become meaning. Locate reflective text in this week’s pages and, in each instance, share with us the meaning Stray is conveying. What purpose does each reflection serve?

How can you apply to your own work what you learned from Cheryl Strayed’s use of reflection?

Barbara, I think there is a difference between general reflection and self-reflection, as you questioned. Another good topic for future discussion! 🙂

Listening to these classes accentuates my feeling of finding my tribe. The comraderie of learning, and using our own reflection to study reflection in a story. Bit by bit, the art of writing is expanded to more than first realized was possible. Learning how to write our Frontstory with these kind of aspects enriches the experiences we describe. Setting, scene, backstory, reflection, questions answered, characterizations, movement, metamorphosis. theme. Thanks Patricia, and everyone.
