Our July First Tuesday Write & Read centered on What My Parents Gave Me. Our parents give us their genes, abilities, aptitudes, talents, traits, values, and such, but they also give us other things we might not often think about, like their quirky, kooky, nonsensical, unusual habits.
I tie my shoes in an awkward manner because two left-handed parents taught their right-handed child to tie them.
My fingers and thumb still go into the wrong holes in a pair of scissors because all the scissors in our house were for left-handers.
My dad also had an unusual way of putting a new trash bag in the garbage can, which I thought nothing of doing until my husband watched me one day and couldn’t believe what he saw.

That’s our prompt for this month–unusual habits we picked up from our parents, grandparents, mentors, or any other adults who served as role models for us.
Once you’ve written your piece, share it with us in the comments section below.

What a beautiful tribute to your parent’s love and encouragement.
I can’t believe I’m the first one to post a story here. It’s been a week, guys! I thought I’d be at the end of a very long line. However, here it is. May it inspire you!
I love your story about books you have read and your description of them. My parents were avid readers as well, so I can relate.
Terry, you had me at “My parents gave me books.” Such a beautiful, poignant story. The descriptions are wonderful. Now, I know where your love for everything written comes from. Thanks for sharing.
